25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee - Sponsored by Micah's Jewelers
Six awkward spelling champions learn that winning (and losing) isn't everything.
Winner of the Tony and the Drama Desk Awards for Best Book, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee has charmed audiences across the country with its effortless wit and humor. Featuring a fast-paced, wildly funny, and touching book by Rachel Sheinkin and a truly fresh and vibrant score by William Finn, this bee is one unforgettable experience.
An eclectic group of six mid-pubescents vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life-unaffirming "ding" of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves a champion! At least the losers get a juice box.
A riotous ride, complete with audience participation, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a delightful den of comedic genius.

We have added the content advisory to make sure parents are aware that this show is more grown-up than shows we normally produce due to some of the show’s jokes and themes. This is a comedy about 10-12-year-olds at a spelling bee, but the original cast was played by adults and was geared more toward adult audiences. We want to be overly cautious as we have just rebranded from “children’s theatre” to “theatre”.
While the overwhelming tone and feeling of “Spelling Bee” is innocent and playful, the musical does include several references that parents may find inappropriate for children.
One male character has a physical reaction to seeing a pretty girl in the audience. This causes him not to want to spell his word. He covers himself with his number badge. Later in the show, he sings an entire song about the event. , which showcases the perils of puberty. We have opted to use the approved alternate song called “My Unfortunate Distraction.”
